The Secret Place

  • The Secret Place

    He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
    Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
    I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
    My God, in Him I will trust.”
    Psalm 91:1-2 (NKJV)

    Psalm 91 is a testimony of God’s protection.

    The secret place is one of intimacy and closeness. It is in the secret place that we can bring everything to God. It is the place where we live in communion with Him. It is home.

    God is described as being a fortress with shields and ramparts. The image that immediately comes to our minds is that of a massive castle made of immense and impenetrable stones. Those who dwell inside are shielded from the danger that surrounds them. Spears and arrows bounce off the walls.

    When we commune with God, we are safe with Him. No evil can reach us because the outstretched wings of His power and love cover us from all harm. This protection is constant. It is where we abide and live under it.

    These two verses speak of complete trust of God. Because we live in close communion with Him, we can trust that He will protect us no matter what comes our way.

    “The Almighty himself is where his shadow is, and hence those who dwell in his secret place are shielded by himself. What a shade in the day of noxious heat! What a refuge in the hour of deadly storm! Communion with God is safety. The more closely we cling to our Almighty Father the more confident may we be.” – Charles Spurgeon
