A day after the House of Commons voted to support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s unprecedented decision to invoke the Emergencies Act in response to protests across the country of COVID-19 mandates, the Senate will start a separate — but equally high-stakes — debate this morning. (9 AM)

According to a motion adopted yesterday, senators will gather — both in person and via webcam — to begin what’s expected to be a prolonged discussion of whether to sign off on the emergency order, which, under the Act, must be formally confirmed by both the House and Senate to remain in place.

Those proceedings are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., continue until 9 p.m., and, if necessary, carry on until Friday. The vote could be held earlier, however, if no senator wishes to speak.
